My King Ratz is a single player mobile game where you take control of a rat who is trying to rebuild their army rats. Explore the sewer city to find, save, and recruit more rats into your colony, or return home and take care of your rats!

The Creation of My King Ratz OST

  1. Beginnings

This song is for the title screen of the game. I wanted to create a sort of upbeat song that is inviting when you first enter the game.

2. Home Sweet Home

Home Sweet Home, the song that plays in the house, drew inspiration from a song from Kirby’s Epic Yarn “Kirby’s Pad” I liked the cozy atmosphere this song exudes and wanted to bring that vibe into the house of our game, which I think I successfully accomplished.

3. Hublands

This song is for the Sewer City. The song is very up beat and has a sort of frolicking sense to it. I wanted to capture the essence of adventure but in a sort of playful manner. This song ended up having a vibe that was similar to the OST of Donkey Kong: Country Returns. A jungle-esque sound that fits with the sort of ‘concrete jungle’ that is the Sewer City.

4. Aerial Attack

This song plays during the “Pop That Bomb” minigame. This song was difficult to create as I didn’t have any visuals for the song until after it was complete. It was hard to get a vibe of what the game would be, so I went for a more cinematic and dangerous tone. The song ended up fitting well enough, but I wish I had the visuals to fully encapsulate the feeling of the game. In this song, I used a ticking sound as well as drums that sound like a heartbeat to create a sort of tension. The ticking symbolizes a bomb counting down and the heartbeat symbolizes the heartbeat of a person trying to defend a city.

5. Smooth Parlor

This song plays during “The Chef Rat Pizzeria”. This song took heavy inspiration from Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force’s “Pizza Parlor”. I wanted to have a sort of jazzy beat to go along with the pizza theme. Originally, I wanted to create a more Italian themed song, but I couldn’t get the melody quite right and opted for jazz instead. I feel like this song really got the vibe of this minigame down.

6. Trigger

This song plays during the “Trap Defusal” minigame. I took inspiration from spy movies and games. I wanted to have some tension in this song since the player is trying to defuse a bomb to save a rat friend. I also added in the low marimbas to remind everyone that we are still in a sewer, and the sound is sort of reminiscent of someone hitting a metal pipe.

7. Trigger

This song plays during the “Rat Fishing” minigame. This song was the first song I created and took inspiration from Club Penguin’s “Ice Fishing”. The moment we decided that we were going to make a fishing game, I knew what kind of sound I wanted the fishing game to have. A sort of calm and relaxing song that I could see myself fishing to. The marimbas coming in really add to that relaxed feel of the entire song as well.

8. Plugged Pipes

This song plays during the “Whack a Cat” minigame. This song was hard for me to make. The idea for the song took a long time to develop and I went through a lot of different melodies. In the end I went with this melody which I’m not entirely sure was the right choice. It has a sort of goofy vibe to it which is sort of what I was going for, but something about it feels off to me. It might be the bass line not matching up with the goofiness. This song definitely needed more time to fully flesh out.

9. Dreamy Wonder

This song plays during the “Rat Crossing” minigame. This song was also difficult to make because I didn’t know if the assets we had at the time were going to be what we had in the final game, or what the overall aesthetic of this game was going to be. In the end, I opted to create a song that was a little similar to a song from our previous game “Smack Dat Rat” that played during the Subway level called “Somber Subway”. The idea of this minigame being the subway from out first game came up in the concepting phase of this game, and I decided to continue on with that idea to pay homage to the first game we created together.
